What is Anorexia?

Anorexia is a compulsion to avoid eating, which negatively affects both one's physical and emotional health. Eating disorders are all encompassing. They affect every part of the person's life, including feelings about work, school, relationships, day-to-day activities and one's experience of emotional well being.

Anorexia is characterized by an inability to maintain a normal or healthy body weight (weight less than 85% of that expected), a relentless pursuit of thinness, a distortion of body image, an intense fear of gaining weight, a lack of menstruation among girls and women, and extremely disturbed eating behavior. Some people with anorexia lose weight by dieting and exercising excessively; others lose weight by self-induced vomiting, or misusing laxatives, diuretics or enemas.

Some people may not fit the full criteria for anorexia but may still benefit from treatment.
