Anxiety Specialist: Evidence-Based Treatments for Anxiety in San Jose

Working with anxiety disorders is my specialty. This is important because there are subtle difference in how each anxiety disorder should be treated. While many therapists work with anxiety, the cognitive and behavioral approach I use includes specific evidence-based strategies for each anxiety disorder. For example, it is important to understand when relaxation methods should be used vs. when it's more important to confront the anxiety and how to design exposures that will be most effective.

I am certified in CBT by the Academy of Cognitive Therapy and have advanced CBT training and experience in the many different anxiety disorders including:

My counseling office is on Saratoga Avenue in San Jose, less than a half-block from Westgate Shopping Center. From this central location, it's a short drive from many Silicon Valley communities including San Jose, Saratoga, Sunnyvale, Santa Clara, Mountain View, Los Gatos, Los Altos, Cupertino and Campbell.

What is an Anxiety Disorder?

A certain amount of stress is normal and necessary to motivate people to meet life's challenges. However, when anxiety becomes chronic, daily challenges begin to feel overwhelming. Worry and stress take control and prevent you from doing things that are important. You may have difficulties with work or school, family and relationships. Your health may begin to suffer. You may not realize the problem is anxiety because it can look like problems with concentration, sleep, muscle tension, feeling on edge, irritability, impatience, and/or feeling unsettled. Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Anxiety

Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is the gold standard for the treatment of anxiety disorders. Cognitive behavioral therapy is practical and goal-oriented to help you find new ways to manage anxiety. I attend frequent training and consultation in cognitive-behavioral therapy for anxiety disorders to ensure I am providing you with effective treatment.

The best way to reduce anxiety is to do what you most fear: to expose yourself to the people, places, things, thoughts, memories or situations that cause anxiety. Most people do exactly the opposite: they avoid what makes them anxious or worried and use unhealthy coping methods to manage anxiety. Exposure therapy, a form of CBT, and cognitive restructuring can help you change this pattern so you can experience more peace and joy in life.

Common Goals of Therapy

  • Learn the difference between normal, healthy anxiety and chronic, unhealthy anxiety and worry.
  • Identify your triggers and how the cycle of anxiety works for you.
  • Become more mindful of the present moment.
  • Incorporate relaxation, pleasurable activities and self-soothing into your daily life.
  • Learn to evaluate your own thinking style to identify catastrophic thinking patterns and increase positive coping thoughts.
  • Improve how you sleep and eat.
  • Manage stress more effectively so you feel less overwhelmed and more able to cope.
  • Become more effective at problem solving and managing situations that make you feel anxious.
  • Practice how to calm panicky feelings and racing thoughts.
  • Confront your fears and learn to tolerate anxious feelings. With exposure therapy, you will feel your anxiety decrease with time.
