Bulimia is a compulsion to binge and purge. It negatively affects both one's physical and emotional health. Eating disorders are all encompassing. They affect every part of the person's life, including feelings about work, school, relationships, day-to-day activities and one's experience of emotional well being.
People with bulimia experience recurrent and frequent episodes of binge eating of unusually large amounts of food and a feeling of lack of control over the eating. This binge-eating is followed by a type of behavior that compensates for the binge, such as self-induced vomiting, misuse of laxatives, diuretics, diet pills, fasting, or excessive exercise. Bulimia is diagnosed if it happens at least twice a week, on average, for three months. People with bulimia can be any weight and are often within the average weight or slightly overweight.
Some people may not fit the full criteria for bulimia but may still benefit from treatment.
