What is Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)?

The phrase "obsessive-compulsive" is often used to describe someone who is meticulous, perfectionistic, absorbed in a cause, or otherwise fixated on something or someone. In contrast, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a more serious condition commonly characterized by intrusive, repetitive thoughts (obsessions) resulting in compulsive behaviors and mental acts (compulsions) that the person feels driven to perform. OCD is applied rigidly, according to rules, and aimed at reducing anxiety by preventing some dreaded event or by resolving a sense of tension. However, the likelihood that a dreaded event will occur, or that performing the compulsions will reduce the likelihood of its occurrence, tends to be imagined or exaggerated. Generally, the person has some awareness that their obsessions and compulsions are irrational and this causes suffering.  In severe cases, OCD affects a person's ability to function in everyday activities and often has a serious impact on the sufferer's and their family's quality of life.

One common misconception is that a person with OCD could "just stop" their obsessions or compulsions if they wanted to. It is often difficult for someone without OCD to understand that the person can't just stop.  OCD is a neurological disorder. While OCD can't be cured, there are effective therapies where you can learn to manage your OCD and your life can become better.

Common Goals of OCD Therapy

  • Identify triggers and cycles of obsessive thinking and compulsive behaviors or rituals
  • Learn techniques to calm your OCD and make your life more manageable
  • Use exposure therapy to confront feared thoughts and objects, either directly or in your imagination
  • Learn response prevention techniques to reduce or stop compulsive behaviors or rituals
  • Apply mindfulness strategies to observe and accept your unwelcome thoughts as part of your OCD therapy
