What is Positive Psychology?
Positive Psychology is a recent branch of psychology with a growing body of research focusing on strengths and what's right with a person instead of just fixing what's wrong. In positive psychology, happiness is defined as having more positive emotions or pleasant feelings such as joy, meaning, purpose, engagement, and resilience compared to negative emotions or unpleasant feelings such as stress, anxiety, depression and anger. Positive psychology doesn't attempt to eliminate all unpleasant feelings such as sadness or disappointment because having some amount of negative emotions in reaction to stressful parts of life is normal. However, it does try to make normal life more fulfilling. Research is starting to explore how this new branch of psychology can be used in psychotherapy. A positive therapy approach integrates research in positive psychology with cognitive behavioral therapy to help people build positive emotions, thoughts and experiences while decreasing negative ones.
