What is Social Anxiety?

Social anxiety is an experience of extreme discomfort about social or work situations and anxiety about being evaluated by other people. Social anxiety includes worry about being accepted by friends and colleagues or in romantic relationships, public speaking anxiety, and performance anxiety. Social anxiety is different from being shy or introverted in that these reflect basic temperament. Social anxiety becomes a problem when it interferes with daily living or a person starts avoiding certain people or situations. Therapy for Social Anxiety In my San Jose therapy office, I can help you manage social anxiety by teaching you skills to act more confidently and assertively, communicate more effectively and be less self-conscious about what you say or do. In addition, we'll practice exposing yourself to the situations and people who make you anxious so you can learn that social anxiety does go down when you stay in situations long enough. And we'll work on cognitive skills so you can practice more kind and gentle self-talk when you feel anxious in social situations.
