Who will benefit?
The Anxiety Coping Skills Class is cognitive-behavioral (CBT) skills group to help you learn effective ways to increase positive emotions and resilience and decrease negative thoughts, feelings and behaviors. The class is ideal for people who want to learn practical skills to manage anxiety, stress and worry. The skills will be applied to work, life and family situations so you can make positive and long-lasting changes.

What will I learn?
You will learn practical cognitive and behavioral skills to manage the stressors and triggers you experience in your personal and work life to reduce anxiety, stress and worry. In this class, you will learn:
  • Cognitive skills to develop a more realistic and flexible mindset, manage negative self-talk, increase optimism and put problems into perspective
  • Mindfulness, relaxation and stress management skills to focus your attention in the present and learn to relax
  • Behavioral skills to become more engaged in life and confront things you avoid
How long is the class?
Each class is eight (8) weeks and each session is 1 hour and 15 minutes long.

How many people are in the class?
A minimum of 5 registered participants is required to start the group. Each class is limited to a maximum of 8 participants.

Where will the class be held?
The class is held in the Anxiety Counseling Solutions office at 1475 Saratoga Avenue, Suite 168, San Jose, CA 95129. My office is conveniently located on Saratoga Avenue by Westgate Mall near San Jose, Saratoga, Santa Clara, Sunnyvale, Mountain View, Los Gatos, Cupertino, Los Altos and Campbell, CA.

How is a CBT skills class different from process therapy groups?
CBT skills classes are educational, interactive and practical. Each class session includes lecture, group discussion about the skills, exercises to learn and reinforce new skills, homework and questionnaires to monitor progress. Unlike a process therapy group, CBT skills classes do not focus on extensive sharing or processing of personal history or issues.

How do I sign up for a class?
The first step is to contact me for a free telephone consultation. We will discuss your background and goals to see if we think the class might be a fit.

What is the fee for the class?
CBT skills classes are an affordable way to learn cognitive behavioral skills to manage anxiety, stress and worry. The fee for the eight-week class is $480 (averages out to $60 per week). In order to maximize group cohesion, I ask that you make a commitment to the entire eight-week class by registering and paying in full before the class starts. The class fee includes:
  • Eight (8) weekly small group meetings
  • Handouts and homework assignments
  • A private group website where handouts and other resources are posted
  • Weekly motivational emails to reinforce the skills learned and a homework reminder
Do you accept insurance?
I am not on any insurance panels. If you have mental health insurance with out-of-network benefits (typically called a PPO), you may be able to get reimbursed for part of the cost of the groups. Please call your insurance company to verify your benefits.  If your insurance covers group counseling, I can submit your claims after every session but you will still need to pay for the group in full before the group starts.

Do I also need to be in individual therapy?
This group is structured like a class where you will learn new information and practice using skills in your daily life. If you have an anxiety or mood disorder and it's having a negative impact on your work, life and/or relationships, you may benefit from working with an individual therapist in addition to participating in the class.
